Durban Celebrities show support for decorex Durban she sheds feature

Four iconic designers will be partnering with four influential celebrities in the dynamic She Sheds feature forming part of Decorex Durban – sponsored by Plascon – which is running at the Durban Exhibition Centre from 21 to 25 March. This uniquely feminine space will see regular outdoor sheds transformed a women’s retreat with each shed incorporating a touch of pink in support of the PinkDrive initiative.

“For this incredibly innovative feature, we are really excited to be welcoming designers and celebrities of such a high calibre,” said Anita Bloom, Creative Director for Decorex SA. “While providing unique perspectives and inspiration for the She Shed design at home, the She Sheds display will also give a significant boost to PinkDrive, assisting in creating awareness and raising funds for the fight against breast cancer.”

The four Durban-based interior designers have outlined some truly creative She Shed designs for their chosen celebrities. Jennifer Jones Interiors will be working with radio presenter, Vukile Mckenzie; Eykon Designs have teamed up with actress, Jailoshini Naidoo; Dreamery have found the perfect partner in actress, Mariam Bassa; while MSquared is excited to be pairing with actress, Kajal Bagwandeen. In addition to the colourful display and education drive, there will be a donation box located outside the She Shed installation to encourage contributions.

Meet the celebrities

Ukhozi FM radio presenter, Vukile Mckenzie, is one of four Decorex She Sheds celebrities that will be in attendance this year. Asked what her ultimate She Shed would include, Mckenzie said: “I’d want a comfortable but elegant design with neutral colours. It should be a space that I can use for my hobbies, work from home but also to relax. It would definitely have a day bed plus a comfortable single couch with a footstool.”

Commenting on the PinkDrive initiative, Mckenzie said this cause lent its support to the movement that cancer must be conquered: “An important aspect of this is early detection, so people need to go out there and get tested. Not getting testing is gambling with your life.”

Renowned actress and one of the stars in the popular film, ‘Keeping up with the Kandasamy’s’, Jailoshini Naidoo, agreed stating that women’s health issues needed much greater attention: “Women get totally absorbed in their role as primary caregiver and forget themselves in the process. The PinkDrive is such a noble initiative and I’m geared up to join the fight against breast cancer.”

Asked how she’d describe her ideal She Shed, Naidoo said: “Classic and simple with a modern twist. I like clean lines but not to the point where the space looks cold and clinical. My entire ensemble must still look warm and inviting. I’d sum up my concept as ‘simple yet edgy’. That does sounds contradictory, I know, but while I like the classic base with neutral colours, I also want an air of opulence…a little drama and glamour…like a gorgeous, ornate chandelier, luxurious wallpaper and a mix of textures, or a little pop of rich jewel-toned colours…something like Audrey Hepburn’s boudoir! All this must be accompanied by artefacts, such as classical literature or unique art pieces, that take me on an historical journey.”

Naidoo’s ‘Keeping up with the Kandasamy’s’ co-star, Mariam Bassa, who plays ‘Aya’, has also lent her support to the She Sheds feature. A larger than life character, Bassa prefers to spend her downtime in something quite grounding.

“I would choose a design that has very soft, earthy tones…something peaceful and calming which takes me back to the natural serenity,” she explained. “I also like just a dash of bright colour here and there as a way to lift the spirit. Just a touch of colour within the soft tones can be really refreshing.”

For Bassa, who has personally been affected by many cancer-related deaths, she can’t think of a better initiative to support: “PinkDrive should be a part of everyone’s life, especially women. This cause is close to my heart, as it should be. It is a sad reality of life and we need to work together to make people aware of it.”

Famed South African actress and television presenter, Kajal Bagwandeen, seeks a She Shed that is ‘inspired by luxury, comfort and nature’.

“I love the indoor/outdoor feel brought about by indoor and hanging plants as well as large windows,” commented Bagwandeen. “This allows for lots of natural light and fuses white, green, earthy colours that I love complimented by a pop of colour here and there.”

When it comes to furniture, she opts for comfortable and eye-catching: “…maybe some floor seating, a swing or a beautiful Persian carpet. I’d prefer hand painted wallpaper if needed, complete with a vintage jukebox for good measure!”

Commenting on her support for the PinkDrive initiative, Bagwandeen said: “Besides the fact that we’ve all had somebody in our circle affected by cancer in some form and have witnessed its passive aggressive-nature, ignorance is not bliss. Sharing knowledge and offering something as simple as a test is enough to save someone’s life. That for me is enough reason to support the PinkDrive.”

Guided by colour

As the exhibition’s headline sponsors since its inception, Plascon has a wealth of colour décor and design insight to share with designers and visitors alike. Kerstin Eser, Plascon’s Media Stylist and Colour Specialist, said she is particularly excited about the incorporation of the very on-trend pink tones into this unique feature.

“From blush to dusty to rose and everything in between, the colour pink is the prominent hue at Decorex this year. We are especially thrilled that it’s coming alive in the form of the She Sheds feature, indicating how a colour normally associated with parties, ponies and pigtails has matured. No longer the wishy-washy pink of the past, you just have to look at one of our sorbet, sweet pastel, true to its name Pink Marshmallow (R7-B2-2) or bright, bold and invigorating flavour of Fuscia Fizz (R2-A1-1) to see how pink is now becoming more representative of independent women who are unafraid to embrace and express their feminine side. With Plascon’s sophisticated new shades such as the mature and rich rose pink, Lover’s Kiss (R2-C1-4) and warm, versatile nude pinks like Walnut Spice (02-C2-2), every woman should unashamedly celebrate the power of pink and how this colour can and should represent women around the world.”
