Suspects arrested for fraud, theft and possession of stolen goods, housebreaking implements in Brackenfell

A 32-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman from Brackenfell were arrested yesterday, 17 March 2021, by members of Flying Squad with the assistance from Brackenfell SAPS for initially theft of a motorcycle as well as a string of other cases including fraud and theft that were detected through a thorough follow-up investigation.

This all unfolded after members of Flying Squad spotted a vehicle, a silver Citroen, on Voortrekker Road Bellville on Wednesday, 17 March 2021 at around 14:30. This vehicle was linked to a theft of a motorcycle case that occurred on 9 March 2021 at a hospital in Brackenfell area and circulated as such. After confirming with Brackenfell SAPS that this was indeed the vehicle and after they could also positively link the suspect, they arrested the man and detained him at Brackenfell SAPS on charges of theft of motorcycle.

The members also started following up on information that the stolen motorcycle might be at an address in Protea Heights, Brackenfell. Upon arrival at the address at approximately 15:30, they found the motorcycle on the premises and arrested a 40-year-old woman for possession of stolen property.

Members then noticed a white Nissan Tida in front of the premises and recalled that this vehicle was circulated as sought in a fraud and theft case in Franschhoek. After confirming this they asked the suspect to whom the vehicle belonged to. She confirmed it to be hers.

Upon searching the vehicle police found a wig, knives, surgical gloves and jewellery. They then searched the boot and found a large amount of keys, remote controls, USB sticks, more knives, wigs and surgical gloves and other housebreaking implements hidden in the panels of the boot.

One of the keys had a keyring on belonging to a guesthouse in Franschhoek. It is alleged that the suspects booked into the guesthouse earlier this month. They paid a large deposit via EFT. They attempted to steal the goods in their rooms but were disturbed by security personnel and they fled. The deposit transaction was also reversed by the suspects.

An USB stick was found among the items in the car. It had a name and contact number on it. Police contacted the person and found him to be the complainant of a housebreaking that occurred during October 2020. He confirmed the USB stick to be among the stolen items taken. Further investigation also linked the suspects to another fraud and theft case at a guesthouse in Groot Drakenstein.

The pair are currently detained for theft of motorcycle, possession of stolen property, possession of suspected stolen property, possession of housebreaking implements, housebreaking and theft and also two fraud and theft cases. The possibility of linking them to further cases are being investigated.

The arrested suspects are due to appear in Kuilsrivier Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 23 March 2021. SAPS will oppose bail.
