Safeguard your car – and finances – against harsh weather conditions

The recent floods in parts of the country, including KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng, reportedly caused considerable damage to vehicles and properties.

And there’s likely more to come, as experts warn of more extreme weather events in 2024.

Drivers are advised to take extra caution on the road when driving in harsh weather conditions, such as hail or thunderstorms. Make sure your car is safe and roadworthy, paying special attention to the tread on the tyres, the condition of the windscreen wipers, and the head and brake lights.

Head of MiWay Blink, Keletso Mpisane says, ‘The recent storms in parts of the country have seen us process more claims for related damage. While this is inconvenient for vehicle owners, it is encouraging that we can help our clients manage the damage caused by weather incidents.’

As consumers buckle under the rising cost of living, it can be tempting to forego car insurance, but it’s useful to remember that insurance offers an important financial safety net in case of an accident or untimely damage to your car.

Mpisane, says, ‘While not all insurance policies provide cover against natural disasters, comprehensive insurance cover offers the widest cover which includes cover against theft and hijacking, damages due to an accident, fire or explosion and natural disasters. However, this type of cover is optional and only applies if the policyholder has chosen comprehensive cover – which comes at a higher cost.”
